Post-Surgery Physiotherapy

Structured rehabilitation after knee, hip, shoulder and spinal surgery — helping patients in Newcastle-under-Lyme and Stoke-on-Trent recover fully and return to normal life.

Why Post-Surgery Physiotherapy Matters

Surgery repairs the structural problem — but it cannot rebuild strength, restore movement or retrain the nervous system. That is what physiotherapy does. Without proper rehabilitation, even a technically successful operation can leave you with persistent weakness, stiffness, altered movement patterns and a slower return to the activities that matter to you.

At Primus Physio, post-surgical rehabilitation follows evidence-based protocols while being tailored to your specific procedure, surgeon's guidelines and personal goals — whether that is returning to work, daily activity or competitive sport.

Post-Op Rehab by Surgery Type

Each surgery type has a different recovery timeline, precautions and rehabilitation programme. Here is what to expect from the most common procedures.

Knee Replacement (TKR / UKR)

Rehabilitation begins within days of surgery. Early focus is on swelling control, restoring knee bend and achieving full extension. Progresses to strength work, gait retraining and return to walking, stairs and daily activities. Full recovery typically 3–6 months.

Hip Replacement (THR)

Post-operative precautions vary by surgical approach — we work within your surgeon's specific guidelines. Early rehab focuses on safe movement, gait retraining and hip strengthening. Return to driving typically 6–8 weeks; full activity 3–6 months.

ACL Reconstruction

One of the most structured rehabilitation pathways. Nine to twelve months for return to sport. Each phase — swelling control, quad activation, strength, proprioception, running, agility, sport-specific — must be completed before progressing. Rushing this increases re-injury risk significantly.

Rotator Cuff Repair

Initial period in a sling with restricted movement to protect the repair. Physiotherapy begins with gentle range-of-motion exercises, progressing to strengthening from around 6–8 weeks. Full recovery for return to sport or heavy lifting typically 4–6 months.

Spinal Surgery

Decompression and fusion procedures each have different post-operative protocols. Physiotherapy focuses on safe movement, core stabilisation, posture correction and a graduated return to activity. We work closely to your surgeon's discharge guidelines throughout.

Meniscus Repair

Meniscus repairs require a more cautious recovery than meniscectomy. Early phases involve protected weight-bearing and range-of-motion work, progressing to strength and return to sport over 4–6 months depending on repair type and location.

What Post-Surgery Rehabilitation Involves

A structured, phased approach that adapts as your recovery progresses — from the first days after surgery through to full return to activity.

Swelling and pain management

Techniques to reduce post-operative swelling, manage pain and settle irritated tissue in the early stages of recovery — allowing rehabilitation to progress more quickly.

Mobility and range-of-motion restoration

Targeted exercises and hands-on treatment to restore full movement at the operated joint, working within your surgeon's precautions at each stage.

Progressive strength rehabilitation

A phased strengthening programme that rebuilds the muscles around the operated area safely — increasing load as healing allows to restore full function and protect the repair.

Gait and movement retraining

Surgery often alters how you move. We address compensatory patterns, retrain normal gait and restore confidence in movement — reducing the risk of problems developing elsewhere.

Functional rehabilitation

Exercises and progressions that replicate the demands of your daily life, work or sport — so rehabilitation prepares you for the real world, not just a clinic setting.

Return-to-sport or activity planning

For patients with sporting goals, a structured return-to-sport protocol with clear criteria at each phase — ensuring you return safely and with confidence.

Phases of Post-Surgical Recovery

Recovery is not linear — but it follows a general pattern of phases. Progress between phases depends on achieving specific goals, not just time.

1

Protect & settle

Manage swelling and pain, maintain safe movement within surgical precautions, prevent muscle wasting.

2

Restore movement

Regain full joint range of motion, begin early strengthening, restore normal walking pattern.

3

Build strength

Progressive loading to rebuild muscle strength and endurance around the operated area and the whole kinetic chain.

4

Return to life

Return to work, driving, sport and daily activities with confidence — and a long-term plan to maintain the gains made.

Post-Surgery Physio FAQs

When should I start physiotherapy after surgery? +
This depends on the type of surgery. Some operations — such as knee replacements — require physiotherapy within days of the procedure. Others need a short healing period first. Your surgeon's discharge notes will usually specify when to start. If you are unsure, contact us and we will advise based on your operation type.
How long does post-surgery physiotherapy take? +
Recovery timelines vary considerably by surgery. Knee or hip replacements typically require 3–6 months of structured rehabilitation. ACL reconstruction may take 9–12 months for full return to sport. Rotator cuff repairs are usually 4–6 months. We will give you a realistic timeline at your first session based on your specific procedure and goals.
Do I need a GP referral for post-op physiotherapy? +
No — you can book directly without a GP referral. Most patients bring their surgeon's discharge notes to the first appointment, which helps us understand the procedure, any precautions and the expected recovery timeline.
Can I use private health insurance for post-surgery physiotherapy? +
Yes — Primus Physio is recognised by AXA Health, WPA, Aviva and Vitality Health. Many policies include post-operative physiotherapy sessions. Bring your membership number and authorisation code. If your surgery was NHS-funded, you can still self-fund post-op physiotherapy privately with us.
Will you follow my surgeon's guidelines? +
Yes — we always work within your surgeon's specific post-operative protocol and precautions. If you have discharge notes or a surgical report, bring these to your first appointment. We can also liaise with your surgical team if needed.
I had my surgery on the NHS — can I still come to Primus Physio? +
Absolutely. Many patients who had NHS surgery choose to supplement their NHS physiotherapy — or replace it entirely — with private sessions at Primus Physio. This gives you more frequent sessions, longer appointment times and a more personalised programme.
What if my recovery is not progressing as expected? +
We monitor your progress at every session. If recovery is slower than expected, we adjust the programme accordingly and can advise whether further investigation or communication with your surgeon is warranted. You are never left wondering why progress has stalled.
