What We Treat

Sciatica is one of the most common — and most mismanaged — conditions we treat. The right physiotherapy, started early, resolves most cases without the need for injections or surgery. Your first session is £60 (60 minutes) — assessment, diagnosis and hands-on treatment combined. Follow-up sessions are £40 (30 minutes). Same-week appointments available, no GP referral needed.

Numbness or tingling
Pain when sitting
Weakness in the leg
Pain when bending or lifting

Common Causes

Disc injuries

A bulging or herniated disc can press on the sciatic nerve, causing pain to radiate down the leg.

Lower back stiffness

Poor mobility in the lumbar spine and surrounding joints can irritate the nerve over time.

Poor lifting technique

Incorrect mechanics during gym or manual work can place excessive pressure on the disc and nerve.

Prolonged sitting

Extended periods of sitting can increase disc pressure and aggravate sciatic nerve irritation.

How We Treat This Condition

Manual therapy

Hands-on treatment to reduce nerve irritation and improve mobility in the lumbar spine.

Nerve mobilisation exercises

Targeted movements to improve sciatic nerve mobility and reduce pain radiating down the leg.

Strength rehabilitation

Building core and hip strength to support the lumbar spine and reduce nerve irritation.

Pain management strategies

Practical advice on positions, activities and habits that reduce sciatic symptoms day to day.

Return to work and sport plans

Gradual, structured return to normal activity without aggravating the nerve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can physio help trapped nerves? +
Yes — physiotherapy can significantly reduce sciatic nerve irritation, improve mobility and address the underlying cause in the lower back.
Why does my leg feel numb or tingly? +
Numbness and tingling are common sciatica symptoms caused by the sciatic nerve being irritated or compressed in the lower back.
Should I rest with sciatica? +
Complete rest is usually not recommended. Staying gently active with the right guidance typically leads to faster recovery than bed rest.
When should I seek treatment for sciatica? +
If pain travels down your leg, causes numbness, or affects daily life, get assessed early. Early treatment prevents the problem becoming chronic. NHS physiotherapy waiting lists in Staffordshire are typically 6–18 weeks; private appointments are often available within days.
Are there any warning signs I need to see a doctor urgently? +
Yes — if your sciatica is accompanied by bladder or bowel changes, numbness in the groin or saddle area, or weakness developing rapidly in both legs, seek urgent medical attention. These are red flag symptoms requiring immediate assessment before physiotherapy.
Will I need an MRI for sciatica? +
In most cases, no. The majority of sciatica cases can be accurately diagnosed clinically and managed with physiotherapy. MRI is usually only needed if symptoms are severe, not improving after several weeks, or if surgery is being considered.
